Michael Winters is a founding partner at Ellis & Winters and has over four decades of experience in commercial real estate work.
Mike operates a broad practice that involves complex commercial and residential real estate development matters, including land acquisition, leasing, development financing, and land use planning. He has significant experience representing clients with a range of commercial development products, including office parks, mixed-use commercial developments, apartment projects and shopping centers. In real estate finance, he has represented local and national banking institutions in the development and construction financing contexts, as well as permanent lenders on a variety of commercial projects.
Over the years, Mike has developed a strong local knowledge of North Carolina’s Research Triangle region. He understands who to engage in order to achieve the results his clients are seeking. This insider knowledge separates Ellis & Winters from the competition.
The attorneys at Ellis & Winters cross-collaborate to deliver full-service representation. This structure allows Mike to better support his clients with high-level concerns throughout the representation process. Since the firm has more partners than associates, clients work with attorneys with high-level capabilities who have “been there before.” This strong experience base ensures that experienced attorneys like Mike are empowered to work collaboratively without sacrificing efficiency.
Mike has been a pillar of the community for most of his career. He has served three terms on the Board of Directors of the Cary Chamber of Commerce as Chairman. He was also awarded Citizen of the Year in 2009 by the Cary Chamber of Commerce.
Ellis & Winters offers comprehensive services in commercial real estate development. Our attorneys represent local, regional, and national institutions in transactions throughout the state and region. The firm’s real estate development practice includes entity formation, acquisition, leasing, financing, and land-use planning. Our lawyers have significant experience with many of the “smart growth” tools currently advocated by state and municipal governments and have had the opportunity to assist our clients in dealing with these land-use and development challenges. We have represented buyers and sellers of real estate ranging from owners of farm tracts for raw land development to shopping center and office park developers.
The scope of our practice encompasses all types of projects, including residential, retail, office, warehouse, hotel, mixed-use, and manufacturing developments. Experience in representing lenders and borrowers in sophisticated real estate financing projects has provided us with the ability to assist our clients in understanding all sides of a financial transaction. We view our role as one of providing legal advice and counsel to assist our clients in maximizing their return while minimizing their risk from a particular transaction.
Our loan experience includes a wide variety of transactions, including real estate construction loans, revolving credit facilities, term loans, and complex syndicated facilities. We provide full-service representation to our lending clients, including creditor representation in loan workouts and bankruptcy matters.
The story of Ellis & Winters is one of ingenuity, ambition and self-determination. In 2000, eleven lawyers from a leading national law firm formed a new premier firm in North Carolina. They created Ellis & Winters to provide exemplary legal representation through a select team of attorneys with the resources and knowledge base necessary to handle sophisticated legal concerns and the freedom to adapt dynamically to every client’s needs.
We pride ourselves on our creative and adaptable approach to legal representation. Our organizational structure puts our clients’ legal matters in the hands of those who are best equipped to resolve them at every stage of the dispute process.
“Michael Winters is held in high regard for his significant experience representing clients in financing transactions relating to a range of development projects, including shopping centers, industrial parks and apartment complexes.”
